HK Stock Market: Hang Seng Falls, Tech Index Rebounds

The Hang Seng Index fell another 379 points yesterday, closing at 25,253, forming two "big bearish candles" and breaking below key moving averages; cumulative gains since June are only 71 points (0.28%). In contrast, the Tech Index performed stronger, with a June gain of about 1.87%.

Tencent Theme: WeChat AI Agent Beta Rumors and "Operation to Monetization" Logic

In the Tech Index rebound, HK stock "king" Tencent (00700) was a market driver. In just a few trading days in June, it soared 13.48%. Besides the platform economy sector recovery, the market widely rumored that Tencent is internally testing a "WeChat AI assistant (AI agent)", which could officially launch as early as this month.

It is said that users will only need to issue a command for the AI agent to automatically connect with over 4 million mini-programs, completing a seamless full-process operation from "finding a merchant" to "placing an accurate order".

Its strategic value lies in pushing China's AI narrative from "model technology R&D" into a "harvest period". With about 1.4 billion users and a strong application ecosystem, successfully integrating an AI agent could form a clear commercialization path from "activating traffic" to "binding customers", enabling profit realization.

Divergence and Valuation: Bulls Optimistic, Bears Question "Profit Model"

Despite having a customer base and expansion blueprint, analysis interpretations remain divided. Citigroup and CLSA are more positive, believing WeChat's user ecosystem is hard to replicate, with at least a 10-year competitive moat; they also see the AI agent launch this year as a certainty. Their view: forward expectations can open up valuation revaluation space.

In contrast, Goldman Sachs cautions that the evolution and profit model of AI agents may still be superficial, and the market has not fully bought into Tencent management's long-term AI strategy.

Funding and Pricing Signals: Options Buying Heats Up, Forward P/E Low

From a stock price performance perspective, bears still seem to have the upper hand. Since 2026, Tencent has significantly lagged behind similar US, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan internet platforms, falling about 15% cumulatively, underperforming the Hang Seng Index.

According to EJFQ system data, Tencent's latest forward P/E is only 12.77 times, 0.4 standard deviations below the historical median. This indicates investors are still pricing Tencent largely within a "platform economy" framework, potentially underestimating its AI potential.

Meanwhile, the derivatives market released buying signals earlier: Tencent's total call open interest has recently risen significantly, once surging to 1.615 million contracts. This change is interpreted as "smart money" starting to position at lows; if the WeChat AI agent launches smoothly and dispels doubts, options positions could trigger a short squeeze, driving a larger valuation revaluation.

Conclusion: Focus on AI Application Launch and Valuation Revaluation Catalysts

Overall, there may be "smart money" entering the market early; with valuations at low levels and growing anticipation of China's AI focus on "full implementation", Tencent is poised to be the biggest potential winner in this wave of applications, worthy of close attention.
